As we know Magento is an open-source platform for e-commerce web sites. This content management system was originally developed by #Varien Inc.
Varien is a company founded in 2001 by Yoav Kutner and Roy Rubin. Varien did many e-commerce implementations using osCommerce. Lack of feature, flexibility and stability of osCommerce made them decide to divide #osCommerce as a new e-commerce project in early 2007. They planned to name it like Bento, but there could be some naming conflict, because
FileMaker Inc. already has that trademarked name.
Finally, the first public beta version of Magento was released on August 31 that year. Varien and osCommerce renamed Bento to Magento, a mix of Bento and Mage. The term Mage is thought to be taken from the traditional tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, where the term Mage is means Wizard. And seems by inspiration of Dragonlance Logo the logo of Magento had been created.
Some similarities could be easily found!
On August 31 of that year and Magento 1.0 stable was released on March 31st 2008 under the Open Software License (OSL) 3.0. Currently, there are 3 versions of Magento: Community (1.4), Professional and Enterprise (1.9).
Nowadays the company has impressive advances! After 6 years past it has grown from 3 to 250 employees.
In June 6, 2011 Magento has joined eBay's new X.Commerce initiative.
Currently the company is still developing and growing, improving the platform and providing services of the highest complexity and quality.
Magento 2 was announced in 2010 and the plans were to release it by the end of 2011. But we still waiting for official Magento 2 release. And who knows, maybe it will have new more exciting rebranded logo.
